Marionneaux’s next move
State Sen. Rob Marionneaux looked like the Democrats’ sure shot to battle for a Senate seat against scandal-prone Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter this fall. Insiders told 225 he was positioned to receive significant funding from former Gov. Kathleen Blanco and the national Democratic Party. He is popular among fiscal conservatives for co-authoring the repeal of the Stelly Tax, friends said he is ambitious, and he is term-limited. Then at the 11th hour in mid-March, Marionneaux applied to replace retiring Public Service Commission Secretary Tubby St. Blanc. It’s a plum post which would significantly sweeten Marionneaux’s retirement package, but as of presstime it remained to be seen which job he was most serious about. But if he were to win the PSC job, he’d certainly have to resign his state Senate seat. This would trigger yet another special election to fill the remaining three years of an unexpired state Senate term, not to mention pressuring the Democratic party to find another Vitter challenger.
